Compass Group Recognized as Best Place to Work by St. Louis Business Journal

Compass Group has recently been recognized by the St. Louis Business Journal as a Best Place to Work in the Small Business category. This marks the first time Compass Group has appeared on the annual list, which recognizes and celebrates companies that go beyond the norm to foster an enjoyable and meaningful work environment for their employees.

“We’re having a lot of fun together at Compass Group. We work hard, we play hard, we drive results, and we enjoy working with each other and our portfolio company partners,” said John Huhn, Managing Partner at Compass Group.

To determine the finalists, the St. Louis Business Journal sent anonymous surveys to employees across nominated companies. Compass Group is one of 83 finalists. Wondering what makes Compass Group a Best Place to work?

It’s In Our DNA

Compass Group stands out as a Best Place to Work due to our vibrant company culture! During the interview process for potential new hires, we prioritize those who will contribute positively to our tight-knit atmosphere, valuing cultural fit over mere skill compatibility. This careful selection ensures that every team member aligns with our Core Values, promoting an enjoyable and collaborative environment.

“I joined Compass because of the people,” said Maureen Dwyer, Vice President. “As I met with members of the team, I could tell the tight-knit family atmosphere they created was authentic. It’s very different from other corporate environments I’ve experienced.”

Office Shenanigans

To further foster this sense of camaraderie, we organize all-company outings, providing opportunities for team bonding and fun beyond the office walls. These outings not only serve as a break from the routine but also play a pivotal role in fostering meaningful connections among team members. A few Compass associates even take vacations together, a testament to the strong bonds within the organization!

"Outside of work, many of us hang out regularly, sharing similar interests and hobbies like sports and traveling," said Jonathan Babcock, Sr. Associate. "So far, I've been on three trips with coworkers, including one international trip. We’re currently brainstorming our next trip."

Look Good, Feel Good

Rather than offering uniform company swag, we actively involve our employees in the selection process! We collaboratively select a handful of brands that cater to everyone’s preferences. Employees then have a budget to go “shopping” for items to embroider with our company logo. This unique perk not only values employee input but also promotes a sense of personalization and inclusivity in our company culture.

“As my role has expanded, I’ve become the team Swag Manager and with that I may have the most influential role in the whole company,” explained Kate Labbe, Marketing Manager. “Look good, feel good. And we always look good.”

Finding Workplace Balance

While still primarily in the office, Compass Group has introduced more flexible work policies over the last couple years to better accommodate employees' schedules, recognizing the importance of balancing professional and personal commitments. For example, during the summer months, we offer office optional Fridays where employees have the flexibility to work from home if they prefer. Although we are flexible, we love when our employees are in the office! We take a lot of pride in the office environment we have created. It helps foster learning, collaboration, and information sharing as teams work together effectively to build our portfolio of companies and help them achieve their next level of success.

“At Compass Group, we continue to look for ways to provide the right balance of flexibility and structure to help us perform well as a team,” said Katie Cason, CFO and CCO. “We know employees increasingly value some optionality to work from home. We also know a lot of great ideas and information sharing comes from our all-team Monday Meeting and the impromptu 'hallway’ meetings that constantly happen in the office. We are striving for a healthy balance of both.”

Like all entrants, Compass Group Equity Partners paid a fee to be considered for this award and to use the award logo in collateral materials. It should be noted that participation fees do not influence the outcome of the evaluation process, and all organizations are evaluated objectively based on the criteria outlined.
